The Cyglan
SBME Encryption Appliance offers a
wide range of options for secure message delivery, providing the flexibility
to support all email encryption requirements. Delivery methods are selected,
by sender, for each message recipient. The Cyglan SBME Encryption
Appliance is a highly secure “pull” technology which combines universal
reach, ease-of-use and the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of any email
encryption technology. Encrypted messages can be received by any email user —
independent of email client or operating system — without installing any
software or requiring the sender to pre-exchange encryption credentials with
the recipients. The Cyglan
SBME Encryption Appliance uses a
“pull” technology to securely store messages behind the enterprise firewall
and allows recipients to access them online via a secure website.
Recipient authentication as well as message
retrieval and reply composition are secured using
SSL (HTTPS). Recipients are notified via email when
new messages are available. Senders may optionally receive reply messages
into their email client inbox. The Cyglan
SBME Encryption Appliance uses
standard PKI certificates (X.509 v3).
In addition to securing email content, the
Cyglan SBME Encryption Appliance technology enhances visibility and
control over email. The Cyglan
SBME Encryption Appliance notifies the
sender when a message was viewed by each recipient. Account management is
enabled for first-time recipients as they are guided through an enrollment,
creating an account on the server. This account may be used to receive any
future messages.

The SBME can be installed using two different configurations. The first method
of installation passes all email from your email server through the SBME. See
figure 1. The second method of installation passes only the secure email through
the SBME, all other non-secure email passes directly from your email server to
